On typical soils of the German northeastern lowlands poplar clones produced on average annually 13.8 and 19.8 t ha-1 dry biomass in rotation periods of three and six years, respectively. The annual biomass production of willow clones was on average 9.8 and 7.0 t ha-1 dry biomass in rotation periods of 3 and 6 years, respectively. The calculated pool of phosphorus and potassium in the topsoil (0-30 cm) decreased within the first 12 years of short rotation forestry only slightly. No demand of fertilisation was observed to provide sufficient supply of nutrients and sustain soil fertility. It was hypothesized, that this is caused by high initial nutrient concentrations in the soils, the use of the nutrient pool >30 cm soil depth, effects of accumulation of organic matter and mycorrhiza formation of poplar and willow clones.
