A field experiment was conducted from September 1993 to August 1995 to study the influence of Azospirillum, Azotobacter and vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) on fodder yield of guinea grass grown as an intercrop in coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) gardens. Growth and yield of forage grass was favourably influenced by the biofertilizer treatments. Through the use of either of the nitrogen fixers, 25% of the recommended fertilizer nitrogen could be saved. VAM inoculation when integrated with N and K fertilizers showed significant superiority over the recommended NPK treatment. The economics also favoured the use of biofertilizers for production of guinea grass.
