ABSTRACT: The first chapter in this dissertation describes the first total synthesis of the fungal antibiotic ((+OR-)) mycorrhizin A (1) and its dechloro derivative (2). A common intermediate in these syntheses was racemic enone 3, which was prepared in six steps from ((+OR-)) 4, a compound also available in chiral form. A crucial step in the preparation of 1 was the stereospecific introduction of chlorine in intermediate 5 via a chlorination-desilicochlorination sequence. The second chapter describes the first total synthesis of ((+OR-)) hibiscone C (gmelofuran), a novel furanosesquiterpeniod isolated from the Blue Mahoe (Hibiscus elatus), the national tree of Jamaica. Central to the synthetic strategy was the intramolecular (2+2) photocycloaddition of acetylenic enone 6. Oxidative cleavage of the olefinic linkage of 7 followed by dehydration produced furan 8. Allylic oxidation of this material and subsequent axial methylation afforded hibiscone C (9) in a total of ten steps. Outlined in the third chapter is a brief study of the intramolecular (2+2) photocycloaddition of enone 10 as a means of constructing spiro(4.5)decanone derivatives, which have been used as precursors to perhydrohistrionicotoxin. Sodium borohydride reduction of photoproduct 11 gave aldehyde 12 after ozonolysis and acylation. Decarbonylation of 12 could not be achieved with Wilkinson's catalyst. Ruthenium tetroxide cleavage of 11 produced 13, which was thermally decarbonylated to afford 14 and 15 in a ratio of 1:10.
