ABSTRACT: Available from UMI in association with The British Library. Methods have been developed for the assay of several phosphatases, including acid phosphatase (AcP), neutral phosphatase (NP), alkaline phosphatase (AlkP) and phosphodiesterase (PD) based on chromogenic p-nitrophenyl ester substrates. All enzymes showed increases in activity as the rhisosphere developed in a silt loam soil and onion (Allium cepa L. var. Ailsa Craig) was investigated in the presence or absence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhisal fungi. The plants were inoculated singly with three different species of Glomus, or were left uninfected, and were grown in sand under low phosphorus conditions. Root and rhizosphere levels of AcP activity were higher for plants infected with G. geosporum (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe and G. mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe compared with control plants. Infection with G. monosporum Gerd. and Trappe did not result in a similar increase in activity but significant increases in plant growth occurred. Experiments using wheat only, showed that increases in activity induced by infection with G. geosporum and G. mosseae become apparent 25-51 days after planting. The origins of soil phosphatases and their contribution to plant nutrition is discussed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
