AB: The effect of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal infection on growth and photosynthesis in nodulated soyabean cv. Hobbit plants, cultured in a low-P soil amended with either high (200 µg P/g) or low (40 µg P/g) levels of Pi [phosphate], was explored in a 2 X 2 factorial experiment. Mycorrhizal (Glomus fasciculatum) and non-mycorrhizal inocula were added to each soil. With low soil Pi, mycorrhizal infection enhanced leaf area, and shoot and nodule DW by enhancing P uptake. Growth was reduced by infection at high soil Pi. Infection by mycorrhizas and soil Pi level had no effect on photosynthetic rate on a leaf area basis. Other effects of P nutrition were explored using solution cultured plants. Soyabean cv. Amsoy 71 were grown with high P or low P solutions (modified half-strength Hoagland's) for 19 d. The most pronounced effect of low P on growth was to reduce total leaf surface area (85% reduction after 19 d). Specific leaf wt was increased by low P; two-thirds of this was due to an apparent increase in cell wall while the remainder was due to enhanced starch accumulation. Low P enhanced starch accumulation in all regions of the plant which correlated well with the observed increases in starch synthesizing enzymes. Conversely, sucrose levels decreased in low P plants except in the root, the only region in low P plants where growth was maintained. Diurnal measurements of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate suggested that it did not play a role in regulating starch and sucrose metabolism in low P plants. After 19 d of growth in low P solution, photosynthesis per unit leaf area was reduced by 45% in soybean plants (at 500 µE/m2 per s and 310 µmol CO2/mol). Much of this decrease in photosynthetic rate was due to non-stomatal limitations, in that CO2-saturating conditions did not improve the relative rate of photosynthesis in low P plants.

Title: Factors Influencing the Symbiosis Between Host Plant Vigna unguiculata and the Mycorrhizal Fungus Glomus fasciculatum
Abstract: Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots of plants. The Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (VAM ), is a common promissing type which is great importance in agricultural applications as a bio fertilizer. Glomus fasciculatum is one of the commonly occurring VA mycorrhizal fungi and studies were carried out which cowpea to optimize the physicochemical factors for commercial inoculum production. In addition to this, studies on spore germination, spore dormancy, spore survival and sporulation efficiency were also conducted in vivo. The mycorrhizal association of G. fasciculatum with several cultivar of cowpea was studied and the cultivar which exhibited the maximum beneficial response was chosen for further studies. The different parameters employed in the present study included soil pH, soil moisture and photo period. Interaction of with beneficial microbes like Rhizobium , Azotobacter and Pseudomonas were also studied by dual inoculation and their significant influence on the plant growth was analyzed in both VAM and non-VAM plants.
Deleterious effects of fungicides, heavy metals and salinity on this symbiotic association were studied and their tolerance level, degree of VAM fungal colonization and spore production were noted. The resistance of mycorrhizal plants towards pathogenic interaction by the production and accumulation of phytoalexin compounds were studied and checked for their anti pathogenic characteristics.
